Alessandro Bastoni asks Tottenham Hotspur target Milan Skriniar to stay at Inter Milan

Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar are two names that have been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer. While the former has committed his future to Inter Milan, the latter is still on Spurs’ radar.

Speaking to Italian outlet Il Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t the Mirror), Bastoni asked the Slovakian international to stay in Milan. He says that the team needs him ahead of the next season.

“He embodies the Inter spirit. It would really be a shame to leave us right now, I hope he stays. I think we’ll still do a lot of great things together.”

Both Bastoni and Skriniar have been on Inter’s books since the summer of 2017. The Italian defender, now 23, has blossomed into one of the best young talents in Europe.

Skriniar is arguably in his peak years but the 27-year-old could still leave this summer. Inter apparently need to raise £55million before the end of the transfer window to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

What next for Spurs?

Eric Dier and Cristian Romero are two important players in Conte’s backline. It is the left side of his defence that saw a makeshift solution in Ben Davies last season.

The Welshman was a mainstay in Conte’s team throughout the campaign and has now renewed his deal at the club until 2025. Constantly selecting the former Swansea City man in that position could highlight two things.

Either the former Chelsea manager lacked options that could play in that position, or he found Davies to be irreplaceable due to his good performances. Whatever the case may have been, there is no doubting that the club needs a new centre-back.

Playing a three-at-the-back system automatically requires a manager to have more depth in that area of the defence. It would have been an ideal situation if Joe Rodon, Davinson Sanchez, and Japhet Tanganga were trusted by Conte to become starters.

But they are not – or at least that was the case last season. Whether something changes going into the next campaign remains to be seen.
