Transfer News: Fiorentina and Villarreal told to pay €20m for Tottenham Hotspur’s Giovani Lo Celso
According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur have placed a €20 million price tag on Giovani Lo Celso. The Argentine midfielder has failed to nail down a starting spot under Antonio Conte.
On the contrary, he was allowed to leave mid-season during the last campaign as he sealed a loan move to Villarreal. Spurs now consider him expendable and €20m in return for him.
The Yellow Submarines as well as Serie A side Fiorentina remain interested in the Argentina international. He was influential in Unai Emery’s side reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League last season.
It is a shame that things aren’t working out quite as well for him at N17 because Spurs paid big money to sign him from Real Betis in 2020. The Lilywhites apparently agreed on a £55 million deal for him.
What next for Lo Celso?
Spurs aren’t short of midfielders on paper. Yves Bissouma’s transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion has added an extra bit of steel in the middle of the park for us.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a dependable option and so is Rodrigo Bentancur, who was signed by Conte in January from Juventus. Tanguy Ndombele is in the same boat as Lo Celso, but it could be harder to find a club for him.
The Frenchman has three years left on his current contract and is on big wages at Tottenham. It is important for Spurs to not lose sight of what is to come next season.

Trying to weaken the bench doesn’t make sense in that regard. We will have four competitions to play in and we must retain a considerable amount of depth in midfield to be able to maximize our chances for silverware.
