Djed Spence reveals what Ivan Perisic told him after Tottenham Hotspur snubbed him vs AS Roma
Djed Spence sealed a move from Middlesbrough to Tottenham Hotspur last month and became the club’s sixth signing of the summer.
The 21-year-old comes to Spurs on the back of a great season with Championship side Nottingham Forest, where he helped them get promoted to the Premier League.
He will be playing in England’s top division himself, but in Spurs’ colours. He was with the team that travelled to Haifa, Israel, to take on Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
Antonio Conte did not use Spence during the game as Spurs succumbed to a 1-0 goal thanks to a Roger Ibanez goal. The Italian manager hasn’t been overly joyous since Spence came in, and he was quick to inform people that the Englishman was a ‘club signing‘.
Spence must be patient
But the Italian manager is not one to rob a player of his chances if they really deserve it. That’s what Spence claims that Conte is asking of him – to work hard and make the most of the chance he gets (h/t Football.London).
“Just buy into what he’s doing, work hard and just play well when I get my chance. That’s it.”
He went on to reveal that Ivan Perisic, another one of Spurs’ summer signings, took him aside after the game against Roma and told him to be patient. Spence was one of the six players that did not play a single minute against I Giallorossi.
“I spoke to Ivan just then. He told me my chance will come, just be ready, train hard, when you get your chance do well and hopefully you’ll stay in the team.”
