Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Heung-min Son named in the Ballon d’Or shortlist

According to the Express), Tottenham Hotspur duo Harry Kane and Heung-min Son have been nominated for the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist. Notably, Lionel Messi was snubbed from the shortlist this year.

Kane and Son were rightly nominated as they both enjoyed a fantastic last season and helped Spurs finish fourth on the table, ahead of rivals Arsenal. They are joined by 13 players from Manchester United and Liverpool on the shortlist.

Likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Luis Diaz and Kevin de Bruyne have all made the shortlist. This is Kane’s fourth nomination with Son picking up his fourth.

Son finished the last season with 23 goals in 35 league appearances. He was the joint-top scorer of the league along with Mohamed Salah. This was his first golden boot since moving to the Premier League in 2015.

Kane had a rather quiet last season. The 29-year-old striker found the back of the net 17 times in 37 league appearances. He built a formidable partnership with Son and is likely to continue that this season.

Both the players were pivotal as Spurs managed to qualify for this season’s Champions League. Apart from these two, club captain Hugo Lloris made the shortlist for the Yashin trophy.

However, it is very unlikely that the pair will win the prestigious trophy. Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema is the favourite to lift the award this year, having won the La Liga and the Champions League with the Spanish giants last season.

Spurs will focus on their next game, after having trashed Southampton 4-1 on the opening matchday last weekend. Kane and co will travel to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Sunday and fans will hope for a victory.
