Destiny Udogie explains reasons why he chose Tottenham transfer this summer
Destiny Udogie is finally a Tottenham Hotspur player. The 19-year-old left-back has sealed a transfer from Udinese but will head back to Udine on a season-long loan.
However, he was on hand to give his first interview in Spurs colours. Speaking about the reasons why he wanted to join Tottenham, Udogie said to the in-house club media (h/t Evening Standard):
“It’s a big honour for me to be here, with this big team, a big club with a big history… It’s an honour to play under a big coach like Antonio Conte. He knows football very well and I’m going to grow a lot.”
He was clearly enamoured by the prospect of playing under the Italian manager in the future and in the Premier League, which he considers to be the best league in the world. He continued:
“I think the Premier League is the biggest league in the world, the most difficult and I like challenges. I’m excited to start and, for me, to play for a big team like Tottenham is a big dream come true.”
Udogie is a smart long-term signing
Spurs are wise to start planning for the future already. Ryan Sessegnon is a potent attacker but his defender leaves a lot to be wanted at times while Sergio Reguilon looks to be on his way out of N17 this summer.
Wales international Ben Davies, naturally a left-back, is being played as a centre-back under Conte, while Ivan Perisic, 33, is not really a long-term solution down the left-hand side of our defence.
Udogie, in his own words, can “can attack and defend” and likes to dribble. He is also being handed an additional season in Italy and could learn a lot there under manager Andrea Sottil.
