Frank McAvennie believes Eric Dier will get destroyed if he continues playing in defence for Tottenham Hotspur
Frank McAvennie while speaking to Football Insider has said that Eric Dier will get ‘destroyed’ by players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland later in the season.
The former West Ham striker believes that this will happen because Dier is not a centre-back, but rather a central midfielder. The 28-year-old is one of the regular players to start at the back for Tottenham Hotspur.
Dier is still playing centre-half, he’s not a centre-half but he’s doing well. He’s not done anything wrong but I think when you come up against good players, like Ronaldo, Haaland, he’s going to be in a bit of bother because he’s a midfield player playing centre-half.
Dier has been playing for Spurs since arriving at the club in 2014. He used to play as a defensive midfielder before, but now regularly starts as a centre-back. The 28-year-old is also capable of playing as a right-back whenever required.
The Englishman has proved himself to be a decent centre-back in the previous years. He played 40 games in all competitions last season in the defensive position. His role was pivotal in helping Spurs clinch a fourth-place finish.
He has started all three games this season for Antonio Conte as a centre-back. The 28-year-old was also on the scoresheet for the first time in three years as Spurs beat Southampton 4-1 on their opening match day.
It is very unlikely that Conte will use Dier in the midfield this season. He has four midfielders fighting for two slots in the Italian’s system. The 28-year-old has built a solid partnership with Cristian Romero and Ben Davies at the back.
McAvennie is entitled to have an opinion. But that does not mean he says such things for a player who has proven himself on the pitch. Dier plays with a lot of determination and has given his best in all the matches that he has ever played for the club.
