Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur explored a late move for Wilfried Zaha

According to The Athletic (subscription required) [h/t hitc.com], Tottenham Hotspur explored a late move for Wilfried Zaha.

This came after the north London club were also involved in talks for Daniel James. Spurs were said to be interested in the Wales international and considered him as an alternative for Bryan Gil.

However, Gil’s move to Valencia collapsed and James joined Fulham on a season-long loan. Spurs ended up buying no one on the deadline day but were rather stuck with an unwanted player.

Zaha seems to be linked with a move away from Crystal Palace every summer. But a move did not materialise for the 29-year-old.

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea were also interested in the Ivory Coast international, but no one could get their hands on him. The 29-year-old, capable of playing anywhere in the front three would have made a fine addition to Antonio Conte’s squad.

The forward had one of his best seasons last campaign when he scored 14 goals in 33 league appearances for the Eagles. He has continued his good form this season too, netting four goals in four games for his side.

He would have not only added depth to the squad but could also be deployed on multiple fronts. However, that was not to be and Conte is now stuck with Gil who he does not prefer so much. But with the long two months ahead, the Italian coach may give the Spaniard some playing minutes.
