A brief look at Tottenham Hotspur and their opponents in the UEFA Champions League group stage

The UEFA Champions League nights will return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after three long years this week. The draw of this season’s group stage took place last month and Spurs were drawn into a considerably favourable group.

The North Londoners qualified for the Champions League on the last day of last season. What made it all the sweeter was that we beat arch-rivals Arsenal to clinch the fourth-place finish and qualify for the prestigious tournament this season.

Antonio Conte’s men were pitted in Group D with Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting CP and Marseille. Spurs were in Pot 2 and had the possibility of facing some of the big guns in the group stage.

We will begin our campaign against the French side Marseille this Wednesday. They finished second last season in the French League. This season they have gotten off to a very good start, winning five and drawing one game.

The Ligue 1 giants are filled with experienced players and they could prove tough to compete with. Both teams will want to get off to a very good start and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in London. They are likely to be our main opponents in the group.

Last season’s Europa League winners Frankfurt are also a force to reckon with. They may go through a turbulent form in the Bundesliga, but on European nights the team completely changes, as witnessed last season. They are likely to be the trickiest opponent for Spurs in the group.

At last, we have the Liga Portugal runners-up Sporting. They have gotten off to a very disappointing start this season, winning only two league games so far. Spurs should get all six points in both home and away fixtures against them.

Despite us getting a favourable group, Conte should not take it easy. Champions League nights are different and many upsets have happened in the past. Tottenham should finish top of their group and fans will pray for that.

In a break from league football, the club will play against three opponents against whom they are not so familiar. What team and tactics Conte deploys in the first game, could give us a preview of what to expect in this campaign.

Tottenham have never won the Champions League in their history. The closest the club got to was in the 2018/19 season when they finished runner-ups to Liverpool. Conte will hope to change that with the exciting team he has under his belt this season. We expect the Spurs to at least make the last eight this season.
