Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn has taken a swipe at Antonio Conte
Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn has taken a swipe at Antonio Conte over his lack of game time at north London.
The 24-year-old arrived at Spurs in 2020 from PSV Eindhoven but failed to make his mark. The Netherlands international struggled for game-time and failed to perform when he was given one.
If this was not enough, the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski in January of this year pushed the former forward further down the pecking order. So during the summer, the player made it clear he wants to leave and was granted his wish.
He joined Ajax, his youth club where he had previously spent six years. The Dutch club signed the forward for £26.4 million and he has hit the ground running there.
The 24-year-old has already scored seven goals in six games for the Dutch champions in all competitions this season. In contrast, the forward managed to score only eight times in 83 appearances for the Lilywhites in all competitions.
Now, the former Spurs man has taken a dig at coach Conte for not giving him enough time to play. Speaking to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Express), the player fired his shots.
I’ve always had the ability to score. But if you don’t play, it’s hard to show that. I’m not working on that [being the top scorer this season]. I don’t have a certain number of goals in my head that I should achieve. The most important thing is to continue like this.
Conte has bought in Richarlison this summer. Harry Kane has been in exceptional form while Kulusevski just gets better with every game. Bergwijn is hardly missed, despite his good form currently at north London.

But the season is a long one. With fixtures compacted, squad rotation will be key. If the Dutchman had stayed back, he would likely have gotten more game time. Only time will tell if Conte made the right decision to allow the 24-year-old to leave.
