Richarlison was the hero for Tottenham Hotspur on his Champions League debut
Tottenham Hotspur overcame a stubborn Marseille side to win their opening Champions League fixture on Wednesday. Richarlison was the hero of the night as the 25-year-old netted twice.
It was the Brazilian’s European debut and he did not disappoint. He was the hero of the night and Antonio Conte did not hold back while heaping praise on his new summer signing. In an interview quoted in the Independent, the Italian had only nice words for his forward.
First of all I am happy for Richy because he deserved to have a night like this. I remember very well when we signed him he said I can’t wait to play and listen to the Champions League music. Not many words but important words for me.
Richarlison scored twice in five minutes in the last stage of the game to win a deserved three points for the Lilywhites. The £60 million signing first broke the deadlock in the 76th minute and got his second in the 81st minute.
The 25-year-old started the game upfront with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. This was the Brazilian’s second straight start after he had impressed everyone last time out.
Marseille were defending very stubbornly and the first half passed without any shot on goal. But the second half changed everything. Chancel Mbemba Mangulu was sent off in the 47th minute for a goal denying tackle on Son.
The French side still defended well, but pressure from the hosts finally broke the deadlock. Both goals were header goals with the second one better than the first. After the match, the Brazil international went over to a section of fans. Surrounded with friends and family, the forward broke down. (h/t Daily Star)
I always said my dream was to play in the Champions League and now this dream will come true. Maybe I will cry because it will be a special moment. When the time comes I’ll be quite emotional.
Richarlison when he first signed for tottenham hotspur
A deserving win for the north London club, Conte will be the happiest. Richarlison was very good again and the Italian coach will know that he has a player who can be deployed in multiple positions up front, and he will deliver.
