Transfer News: Lucas Moura could leave Tottenham Hotspur as a free agent
According to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Lucas Moura could leave Tottenham Hotspur as a free agent next year when his contract expires.
The Brazil international is currently on a deal that expires in the summer of 2023, with Spurs having an option to extend by another 12 months. His performances this season could impact his future at Spurs as the club are yet to decide what to do with the ex-Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star.
Romano also denied any summer transfer interest from Aston Villa but claimed that Newcastle United were interested in signing the winger. However, they never made a serious approach to sign him.
“Despite reports to the contrary, Lucas Moura has never been close to joining Aston Villa. Newcastle were interested this summer but there was never an advanced negotiation with Tottenham.”
The Italian transfer expert claimed that Spurs could choose to extend Lucas’ stay depending on how he plays this season. Currently, the 30-year-old attacker is out with a calf injury and missed the most recent clash against Sporting CP.
“I think Lucas may have the chance to leave Spurs as a free agent but it will depend on how his performances go this season, the club has not yet decided.”
Lucas hasn’t enjoyed a great deal of importance under manager Antonio Conte. The Italian boss has found four world-class attackers to choose from each week, with Son Heung-min and Harry Kane virtually undroppable.
Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are already vying for regular starts amongst themselves and hence, Lucas will find it very hard to slot into our attack on a regular basis. However, the right-wing-back slot is somewhere he can play.
