According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t the Express) last month, Tottenham Hotspur came close to signing Nicolo Zaniolo from AS Roma this summer, only for the Italian club’s owners to pull out of the deal at the 11th hour.

The Italy international, of course, ended up staying at the Stadio Olimpico with Jose Mourinho’s side. He featured in both of their opening Serie A games this season before a shoulder injury put him out for three league games.

He returned recently and was an unused substitute for Mourinho in Roma’s 2-1 win against Empoli on September 12. Zaniolo currently has less than two years left on his current contract with Roma.

Once a player gets this close to seeing their contract expire, clubs would start to get nervy – especially when the player in question is as good as Zaniolo is. At 23, his best years are still ahead of him.

Spurs must keep tracking Zaniolo

Losing a player of his capability for nothing in the future – in case he doesn’t renew his deal – is a nightmare scenario from a financial standpoint. Speaking about his contract situation and the apparent transfer interest from Juventus and Tottenham (h/t Fabrizio Romano), he said:

“It was a normal summer for me. It always seems that I’m on the verge of leaving AS Roma and then… I’m always here. This club gave me everything. New deal? We still have one year and half to discuss about it.”

From Zaniolo’s words, it sounds like he is happy to ply his trade in Serie A with I Giallorossi. The club indeed gave him ‘everything’, as Rome is where the Italian has made his name in the footballing world.
