Tottenham Hotspur have 50% sell-on clause in Marcus Edwards’ Sporting CP contract
According to the Telegraph (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur transferred the full 50% sell-on clause from Marcus Edwards‘ contract at Vitoria Guimaraes to his latest deal with Sporting CP.
The English winger left Spurs on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. He then joined another Primeira Liga side, Sporting, in January earlier this year for a fee of £9million.
However, rather than agreeing to pocket £4.5million then and there, Sporting and Spurs came to an agreement that the 50% sell-on clause will transfer to his contract at his new club.
That move could turn out to be an astute piece of business from Daniel Levy, Fabio Paratici and other decision makers at Spurs. His current deal has a release clause in the region of £52million.
A wise financial move
If it is met, then Spurs stand to pocket £26million from the sale of Edwards. His stock has risen after his brilliant performance in the Leoes‘ 2-0 win against Tottenham at Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday night.
Hugo Lloris was on hand to deny him from point-blank range in the first half after an amazing run from the 23-year-old winger. That was arguably the highlight of the game and Edwards showed Spurs fans what they were missing out on.
He left N17 after making just one senior appearance for the Lilywhites, which came in a cup game against Gillingham in the 2016/17 season. However, it’s not like Spurs are devoid of quality wingers.
