Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier earns England call-up after 18 months
Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Eric Dier has been named in manager Gareth Southgate’s 28-man England squad for the upcoming Nations League games, as per Spurs’ official website.
The English centre-back was last called up to the senior team in March 2021 and his last appearance for the Three Lions came in a 4-0 win against Iceland in November 2020.
Dier has been a very important part of manager Antonio Conte’s starting XI ever since the Italian replace Nuno Espirito Santo last year. Dier has been a leader at the back and it is good to see him getting recognition for it.
This call-up is also important as it comes just before the FIFA World Cup in November. This is the last international squad that the countries would be naming before the showpiece event commences in Qatar.
Important month for Dier
Dier’s versatility is also something that onlookers can forget about. The 28-year-old used to play as a defensive midfielder in the early parts of his career but has made a name for himself as a centre-back.
The Sporting CP academy graduate last played for us in the UEFA Champions League group stage game on Tuesday night, where we lost 2-0 to the Portuguese giants.
Southgate’s England side now prepare to take on Italy on Friday, September 23 before playing hosts on Monday at Wembley against Germany. Dier would be hoping to get some minutes there.
