Ben Davies believes Tottenham Hotspur must get better to progress in the UEFA Champions League
Ben Davies knows that Tottenham Hotspur must improve if they want to progress further in the Champions League.
Spurs conceded twice in injury-time against Sporting Lisbon to go down 2-0 and lose all three points. The defeat has left them second in their group after two games played.
And now Davies has said that his side must get better if they want to progress in the competition. In an interview published in the Metro, the Wales international had his say.
It felt like we were always in the game and were always going to create chances. But we lacked that final little bit. At the end of the day we lost the game so we have to regroup and move on. It is tough, it’s a competition we want to play in but if we want to progress we have got to be better than we were.
The north London club were simply not at their best last time out. Players struggled to take their chances, especially the attackers. It proved costly as Sporting CP made us pay in stoppage time.
Emerson Royal was at fault for both goals. The right wing-back struggled to mark his players and his club paid the cost. Spurs were marginally the better team on the night but ended up on the losing side.
But there was one player who stood out. Ivan Perisic was the best player for the club on the pitch. The Croatian delivered some beautiful crosses into the box, but there was no one to turn those in.
Davies is not wrong in his assessment. The team cannot afford to drop points or it could become very tough for them to move on to the next stage. Also, Spurs would like to finish top of the table to hopefully get an easier draw in the Round of 16.
