Antonio Conte is happy with Emerson Royal at Tottenham Hotspur
Antonio Conte has revealed that he is happy with Emerson Royal at Tottenham Hotspur. The Italian coach has admitted that Emerson has made “good improvement”.
Speaking to football.london in his pre-match press conference, the Spurs boss praised the 23-year-old right wing-back.
In my opinion Emerson had a good start in this season and he can play in this position. I’m happy with him. He could have scored three goals in the last game. He has improved a lot since last season. Don’t forget Emerson played every game in this period, for sure now he can be a bit tired.
Emerson came under huge criticism for his performance in the last game, especially during injury time. The Brazilian was at fault for both of Sporting Lisbon’s goals after having a decent 90 minutes.
The 23-year-old has started all eight games for Spurs this season in all competitions. He has just registered one assist to date and leaves much to be desired regarding his attacking contributions.
The first-choice right-back for most of the last season, the player fell down the pecking order when Matt Doherty returned. But following the Irishman’s injury, Emerson was back in the side as the first-choice.
Djed Spence was signed earlier this summer, but the player has only played once for one minute when he came on against Nottingham Forest. Given the poor display by the Brazilian in the previous game, one would think Spence would start the next game.
Conte has not trusted Spence yet but could consider starting him for the next game. Emerson has played all the games till now and could do with some rest to regain match sharpness.
