Journo reveals what Clement Lenglet told him about his Tottenham Hotspur future beyond 2023
Clement Lenglet signed for Tottenham Hotspur this summer on a loan deal with no option to buy. That means as of now, he is set to return to Barcelona in the summer of 2023.
The France international has been seen by many as a stop-gap signing this summer as they failed to sign their primary targets. Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has provided more backing to this theory.
Answering a fan’s question in a QnA session, Gold replied with a comment:
“Conte seems to like him. Spurs definitely wanted [Josko] Gvardiol or [Alessandro Bastoni] last summer but they were both big money signings and unavailable for varying reasons and that’s why they went for the experienced Lenglet and this loan.”
Gold claims that he spoke with the former Sevilla centre-back when the team was in Israel this summer to take on AS Roma in a friendly. Lenglet apparently stated that the coming months will be important with regard to his long-term future at the club.
“I asked Lenglet out there about what comes next, as there’s no option to buy him, and he said the coming months will decide what happens. He wants to be a big success in the Premier League and then it’s down to Spurs and Barcelona to speak about the future.”
With no obligation to buy the defender, this makes it an easy situation for Spurs in case the deal doesn’t go as planned. So far, Lenglet has hardly put a foot wrong and as Gold claimed, the former Inter Milan manager has taken a liking to him.
It remains to be seen if the Catalan giants will entertain Tottenham next year in case the Lilywhites are impressed by Lenglet and want to keep him for longer. There are no indications of that yet.

He has played four matches for Spurs so far and wasn’t in Didier Deschamps’ latest France squad for the UEFA Nations League games later this month. He would hope to play more regularly before the final 26-man shortlist is released by Les Bleus for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
