Tottenham Hotspur did not sign Pau Torres from Villarreal due to price tag
According to Fabrizio Romano in his CaughtOffside column (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Chelsea were interested in signing Pau Torres from Villarreal.
However, the trio did not go through with a move due to his apparent price tag. Romano wrote:
“Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham also explored this possibility but didn’t want to spend €40-45m. I think it’s a very good opportunity on the market; he has experience, quality, left footed. A very good CB.”
Torres could have been a useful addition down the left-hand side of our defence where Ben Davies has played out of position. However, the natural left-back has looked decent in that position and has done nothing to be ousted from the backline.
However, a case can be made that signing a natural centre-back with prior experience of playing in that position could suit Spurs better. Nevertheless, Tottenham aren’t really doing a lot of things wrong this season.
Spurs missed a trick
The defence seems solid and the attack is firing on all cylinders. We are just one point away from the top of the table and things are looking up.
Nevertheless, a centre-back in the upcoming windows would be a good idea. Clement Lenglet arrived on a season-long deal from Barcelona while the likes of Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga seem to be out of favour at the club.
The former has been loaned out to Rennes this season. Davinson Sanchez is a very good option to have as a backup centre-back but someone like Torres could really raise the level of our defensive line.
