Paul Merson is confident Arsenal can beat Tottenham in the North London Derby
Writing in his Daily Star column as quoted by Mirror, former Arsenal midfielder and current pundit Paul Merson is confident that his former side can get the better of Antonio Conte’s Tottenham in the North London derby later today.
As clubs return to league football after a prolonged hiatus due to the international break, Arsenal and Tottenham play out one of the most hard-fought rivalries in the world in the North London derby.
Returning from an international break is never easy for clubs. It is not that easy to pick up from where you left off, and both clubs will have a job on their hands to try and get back to their best level quickly.
Arsenal are high-flying in the Premier League this season leading the table as things stand having lost just one game until now. Spurs on the other hand find themselves third in the table but are unbeaten until now.
Merson, however, thinks that despite the kind of results that Spurs are producing, they have been far from convincing and that Arsenal can come out on top today.
“Spurs have been getting away with it. Perhaps there is an art to that but the 6-2 win over Leicester was never a 6-2 football match. This time around, if they do not play well, they will not walk off that pitch victorious. Arsenal could blow them away”
It is not surprising to see a former Arsenal player support the Gunners over their rivals Spurs in such a huge game and I think Merson’s quotes about the Lilywhites getting blown away are a little over the top.
Spurs have started off the season pretty well. Antonio Conte has gotten his side to play well this season after making a number of reinforcements in the summer and will be looking to continue on the same note.
