Tottenham Hotspur backed to replace Hugo Lloris with Illan Meslier of Leeds United by Charlie Adam

Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam, while speaking exclusively on Stadium Astro, has backed Tottenham Hotspur to potentially replace Hugo Lloris with Leeds United’s Illan Meslier.

Last month, Phil Hay of the Athletic (Subscription Required) claimed that Spurs are watching the 22-year-old French goalkeeper. Now, Adam has backed Meslier to be the one who could replace Tottenham’s captain between the sticks.

The ex-Blackpool star said:

“He’s a young kid that’s had a couple of years of experience in the Premier League. He’s made mistakes but Bielsa backed him… Jesse Marsch has backed him. And that’s a confidence thing, so maybe someone like Meslier could be the one for Tottenham in the future.”

Meslier has been in the Premier League for a little over two years now since he joined from Lorient in France. Lloris, meanwhile, has been here for more than a decade after he left Olympique Lyonnais for Spurs.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner, however, is in the final two years of his contract [Transfermarkt]. At 35, maybe it is time we start finalising the man we want to replace the legendary French stopper. Adam continued:

“Meslier’s been in the [Premier League] a few years now. [Jordan] Pickford has had his ups and downs. Someone that’s had PL experience will help Tottenham go forward.”

Meslier, however, has close to four years left on his deal at Elland Road (Transfermarkt). This clearly means that the Whites have strong control of where the France U21 international’s future lies.

Lloris has been here for so long and has been dependable to an extent that we have never had to worry about how our number goalkeeper would be. Arguably only David de Gea at Manchester United has shown such longevity for a ‘big six’ club in the Premier League in the past decade or so.

More Tottenham News:

Meslier is tall, agile, and young. He mans the backline well and if we do go for him, it would be a very smart coup on our part.
