Alan Hutton backs Tottenham Hotspur to beat Chelsea to the signing of £77 million-rated Josko Gvardiol
Former Tottenham Hotspur ace Alan Hutton has backed the North London side to beat Chelsea to the signing of RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian came close to joining the Blues in the summer of 2022.
Chelsea were in talks to sign Gvardiol for £77 million in the recent transfer window, with him moving to London in 2023. However, the 20-year-old ended up staying with the Bundesliga outfit and signed a new five-year contract.
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), the ex-Tottenham defender believes the North London side have every chance to compete with the Blues for Gvardiol. Hutton feels Spurs will become more attractive with time for the likes of the Croatian.
“I don’t see why Tottenham can’t beat Chelsea to him [Gvardiol].
“They’re definitely now in the conversation, fighting with the likes of Chelsea, and that attractiveness will only increase with cup runs and European football.”
Tottenham have progressed under Antonio Conte. The Italian managed to help the North London side finish in the top four last season, securing Champions League football.
Subsequently, Conte was evidently backed in the recent transfer window with several quality signings. Under the Italian, we have had our best start to the campaign in the English top flight in the Premier League era after beating Everton.
Unfortunately, Tottenham were unable to build on that against Manchester United. Spurs were overwhelmed by the Red Devils at Old Trafford and lost 2-0.
The North London side’s defence has looked a bit shaky in recent weeks. Conte has put his faith in the partnership of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies once again this season. But it seems we need more quality in the backline.
Gvardiol is one of the most exciting prospects in world football. The 20-year-old signed for Leipzig in the summer of 2021 from Dinamo Zagreb. Since then, he has been a vital member of the Bundesliga outfit’s starting XI.
