Jamie Redknapp believes Hugo Lloris was fouled in the buildup for Newcastle United’s opener vs Tottenham

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Hugo Lloris was fouled by Callum Wilson for Newcastle United’s opening goal.

Wilson clashed with the French goalkeeper which led the ball to go loose. The Magpies striker kept his calm and chipped the ball into the net to give his side the lead. VAR was consulted and after much delay, it was deemed a fair goal.

Speaking at half-time on Sky Sports (h/t Mirror), the former Spurs midfielder believes that the 35-year-old was ‘impeded’ in the leadup to the strike.

“I think it’s a foul, I think he impedes him. He (Lloris) comes out, Wilson bumps into him… unbelievable composure to score, but I think I would be so disappointed if I’m Spurs’ manager [or] players. Look at his arm there, it’s a foul. They bump into each other and he impedes him.”

Things went bad to worse when Miguel Almiron took advantage of some poor defending and slotted the ball past the Spurs captain in goal to make it 2-0 for his side.

Harry Kane scored his 10th goal in the league this season when he met Clement Lenglet’s cross from the corner in at the back post in the 54th minute to give his side hope to salvage a point or perhaps make a comeback.

But that was not to be and Antonio Conte’s side suffered their first home defeat of the season. It was just poor refereeing to allow the Magpies’ first goal to stand. The defeat sees us remain in the third position with 23 points, though the gap to leaders Arsenal is increased by five points.
