Tim Sherwood believes uncertainty around Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur hinders Harry Kane and Son Heung-min contract talks
Former Tottenham Hotspur player and manager Tim Sherwood believes the uncertainty around the future of Antonio Conte could hinder the contract talks for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
The England international’s existing deal expires in the summer of 2024. And there have been talks of the 29-year-old potentially leaving the club in the coming future.
Conte’s current contract will be up at the end of the season. And speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Express), Sherwood, who spent a few months in the Spurs dugout, feels the situation around the Italian needs to be resolved soon.
“Let’s face it, he [Conte] only has until the end of the season. I mean he’s not signed a new contract.”
“You are asking Harry Kane and Son to extend their contracts, why would you extend your contract? If you believe in this manager, if your manager is going to be there until the end of the season. You have to make a decision on him, soon.”
Conte has, over the years, proved he is one of the best managers in football. The Italian has found success with Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan before taking the helm at Tottenham.
Thus, there is evident concern amongst fans about the gaffer continuing his reign in North London. And the club’s hierarchy need to ensure the Italian tactician extends his stay at N17.
Conte was appointed Tottenham manager in the middle of last season after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo. The Italian had left the Nerazzurri after the 2020/21 campaign in which he ended their 11-year Scudetto drought.
The 53-year-old’s appointment instilled some hope in Spurs fans. We have also been longing to lift silverware for 14 years now. And the Italian has a decent track record of bringing success wherever he goes.
In the recent summer transfer window, supporters felt Tottenham had finally backed a manager. Conte was afforded several quality signings. The additions of the likes of Ivan Perisic Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet evidently strengthened the squad.
