Tottenham Hotspur urged to seek an upgrade on goalkeeper Hugo Lloris after Newcastle United loss
Former Hibernian striker Tam McManus has urged Tottenham Hotspur to seek an upgrade over Hugo Lloris after the club’s 2-1 loss against Newcastle United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, McManus said:
“He’s the captain of France so he is obviously a good goalkeeper but I think, if you are Tottenham, then you can upgrade him.”
Lloris arguably had a hand in both goals Spurs conceded at N17 against the Magpies. He was questionably off the line when he was tackled by Callum Wilson.
The English striker won the duel after taking Lloris down and slotted the ball into an empty net. It was arguably a foul on the France international but nothing was given.
Then, Miguel Almiron left Clement Lenglet for dead and hit a shot underneath Lloris to make it 2-0 on the day. The former Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper could have certainly done better for this one.
McManus believes the 35-year-old was at fault for both goals and the goalkeeping department is an area they could address in the near future.
“For the Callum Wilson goal he should have just lumped the ball up the pitch but he tried to be clever and paid the price. What was he thinking? He reacts slowly for the second goal, it’s a great finish from Almiron but it goes under Lloris. You can point the finger at him for both goals.”
It won’t be a surprise if Tottenham do look for a new goalie soon. Lloris is 35 and his latest contract expires in the summer of 2024. Valencia’s Giorgio Mamardashvili and Leeds United’s Illan Meslier are two names linked with us but it remains to be seen if we will pursue them.
McManus continued:
“As I say, he is someone who maybe I have only seen him on his bad days. I don’t think he is the calibre Tottenham could have. “I think Tottenham could have a better goalkeeper in there and maybe that is something they will look to address.”
McManus’ comments about Lloris’ quality (or the lack of it) certainly won’t please a lot of Spurs fans. The France international has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the past decade in England.
