Emerson Royal slammed for ‘ridiculous’ no-look pass for Tottenham Hotspur vs Sporting CP
Jermaine Jenas has slammed Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal for attempting a ‘ridiculous’ no-look pass against Sporting CP in the team’s 1-1 draw earlier this week in north London.
Spurs trailed to a Marcus Edwards goal for nearly an hour before Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser from a corner. After that, Tottenham looked like the likeliest team to get a winner.
The moment was in our favour during one such play around the 80th minute when Emerson had the ball down the right flank. Instead of playing a simple pass to Bryan Gil behind the Sporting defence, he attempted a no-look pass.
The connection was torrid and the ball went out for a goal-kick. It relieved much of the pressure on the Portuguese outfit.
Too harsh on Emerson
Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz of Liverpool are perhaps the two footballers from South America who attempt no-look passes more than the others. It’s a joy to watch when it comes off.
Not so much when you fail. Jermain Jenas was critical of Emerson for attempting the pass without having the quality to do it and the former Spurs midfielder said on BT Sport (h/t Football.London):
“It’s ridiculous. If you’re going to do it, at least have the quality to do it. You’re just letting the team off the hook.”
Emerson has had a tendency to frustrate fans at times even though he has been decent this campaign. The former Barcelona right-back just looks like he has a mistake in him.
However, he has been a dependable option down the right-hand side and it was just his pass, albeit deflected, that resulted in a goal that should have won us the game in the 95th minute.
