Matt Doherty ‘confused’ after VAR denied Tottenham Hotspur late win vs Sporting CP for Harry Kane offside

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty said he did not understand what exactly happened for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to rule out Harry Kane’s last-gasp winner against Sporting CP.

Spurs trailed via a stunning Marcus Edwards effort in the first half. However, they fought their way back into the game and after an equaliser from Rodrigo Bentancur, they looked like they could go on and win it.

Their joy was cut short when Kane’s 95th-minute winner was chalked off for offside. The onside line was drawn from the ball and Kane’s knee was apparently adjudged to be offside.

The Republic of Ireland believes that the ball was hit behind and came off the Sporting defender so it should have been a different phase of play. A confused Doherty said after full-time to BT Sport (h/t BBC):

“I think you can see from the celebrations we thought we won it. I don’t really know what happened at the end.”

“I thought because it went backwards and hit a defender it was a different phase of play. I’ll have to look at the rule book. A few of us don’t have a clue what happened.”

The offside call left many confused and those on Spurs’ side of the line were highly frustrated. Rightly so as well, given how we could have sealed qualification without having to worry about the trip to Olympique de Marseille.

The French will go through if they beat us. We, meanwhile, need a point to qualify. It’s a shame to think that a game we could have taken lightly now becomes our most important tie of the season.
