Jamie Carragher tells Tottenham Hotspur to upgrade on Hugo Lloris and Clement Lenglet

Tottenham Hotspur have been told by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher to make new signings in order to replace Hugo Lloris and Clement Lenglet in the starting XI.

Lloris has been at Spurs for over a decade since moving here from Olympique Lyonnais. The 35-year-old has blown hot and cold over the past few years, however.

He is on a contract that expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt) but Carra believes the Lilywhites should seek a replacement soon. The Englishman wrote in his column on the Telegraph (Subscription Required) [h/t the Express):

“Despite his experience and medal haul, Lloris is not good enough to take Spurs to the next level and win the big trophies.”

“He is a World Cup-winner but he makes too many errors and is not the same level as the best around. It is a position where I feel Spurs have been lacking for a while.”

It won’t be news to Spurs fans that Lloris isn’t the best in the world with his feet. But we have compromised on that due to his solidity and reliability in between the sticks.

However, his performance against Newcastle United in a 2-1 league loss earlier this month serves as a reminder that he does have a mistake in him every now and then. Given his age and contract situation, however, it is obvious that this is a position Spurs must pay immediate attention to.

They have been linked with names such as Marc Andre-ter Stegen, Jan Oblak, Illan Meslier, and Giorgi Mamardashvili but it remains to be seen if any of these four names will join us in the near future – especially with Lloris here for another year and a half.

Clement Lenglet is another player Carragher isn’t a fan of. The Frenchman is only here on a loan spell and is set to return to Barcelona this summer but Carra wants the club to sign a world-class centre-back at the earliest.

“Add the need for another centre-half – Clement Lenglet’s performance against Newcastle was poor.”

This will be a busy January transfer window. Conte has already hinted that the club could make a few signings in the winter and after our recent results and injury issues, perhaps this would be the correct way to approach the upcoming transfer window.
