Tottenham Hotspur to shift focus to enhancing the squad’s ‘quality’ in January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur focused on increasing the ‘quality’ of the squad in the summer transfer window, signing players like Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, and Richarlison.
Richy added much-needed depth up front. Perisic did the same down the left flank where Sergio Reguilon clearly lost favour under manager Antonio Conte.
Forster was evidently signed as Hugo Lloris’ backup while Yves Bissouma has failed to displace either Rodrigo Bentancur or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from our starting XI. Djed Spence is behind Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty in the right-back pecking order.
Destiny Udogie is a signing for the future with the 19-year-old currently on a season-long loan at Udinese. Now, Football.London give an encouraging update on our stance in the January transfer window.
What should Spurs do?
Spurs will apparently focus on improving the “quality” of the squad midway through the season. So, where would Tottenham fans want an upgrade?
A creative midfielder won’t hurt. A world-class centre-back that automatically becomes a starter in our backline would also be appreciated – especially someone in the ilk of Alessandro Bastoni – the young centre-back from Inter Milan.
Hugo Lloris has been great this season. But he is 35 and a bit inconsistent – as shown in our 2-1 loss against Newcastle United.
It would be wise to start planning for a future without the France international. A young goalkeeper capable of hacking it on the big stage would be ideal.

Up front, Spurs could arguably use an attacker that recreates the impact Steven Bergwijn had for us last season. He wasn’t a pinned starter but he was versatile and did a great job whenever called upon. Bryan Gil clearly isn’t at that level yet.
