Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham could swap Emerson Royal for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries
Tottenham Hotspur could use Emerson Royal as a makeweight in a deal to sign Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries in the near future, who is now their ‘priority target’, as per Italian outlet CalcioMercato (h/t the Express).
The 23-year-old full-back was signed from Barcelona last year when Nuno Espirito Santo was still calling the shots at Spurs. His technical ability on the ball and decision-making in the final third has left a lot to be desired at times.
However, he has continuously been ahead of Matt Doherty and Djed Spence in the pecking order down the right-hand side. In fact, the Republic of Ireland international only saw a bit of regular playing time during Emerson’s three-match suspension earlier this season.
Dumfries is one of Inter Milan’s most regular players since signing for them from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021. He was recently linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea this summer but he did not leave Milan for the Premier League.
What should Spurs do?
The player, as per Fabrizio Romano on the United Stand’s YouTube channel, wanted to be a regular starter for Inter ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup so that he is placed in the best possible manner to start for the Netherlands in Qatar.
After the World Cup, it’s not illogical to think that Spurs could face a fair bit of competition if Dumfries manages to have an impressive World Cup campaign with Holland.
Emerson, meanwhile, could be a smart player to consider in a potential player-plus-swap deal. The former Barcelona right-back has time on his hands and is a balanced full-back that Inter could use under manager Simone Inzaghi – who, like Conte, plays with advanced wing-backs.
