Tottenham Hotspur unlikely to sign Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni in January
According to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to sign Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni in the January transfer window.
As per Gold, Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol were two of Spurs’ top centre-back targets in the summer transfer window. They were willing to pay the sum for the Italian.
However, the 23-year-old did not want to leave Inter Milan at that point. He is fast approaching the last 18 months of his contract and the journo says there have been talks regarding a renewal.
“I don’t think a January move is likely at all, but I am intrigued by what is happening with Alessandro Bastoni at Inter.”
“You know the history, you know Spurs really wanted him as one of their top two centre-back targets in the summer. [Josko] Gvardiol was the other. Spurs were willing to pay the money just the player was not looking to leave at all.”
Bastoni has made 14 appearances across competitions for I Nerazzurri and provided three assists during that time. However, he hasn’t made himself a fixed part of Inter’s starting XI as he has started just seven games in the league. Gold continued:
“There keeps being talk about him getting a new contract. But at the moment, he’s still got the one that expires in 18 months’ time roughly. I do think January will be too difficult to prise him away.”
It’s no secret that centre-back is an area we can desperately use strengthening in. Clement Lenglet arrived as a stop-gap signing on a loan deal but hasn’t been up to the mark at times.
Davinson Sanchez seems like he has a mistake in him whenever he plays while Japhet Tanganga is very low in manager Antonio Conte’s pecking order.

If January is a tough time for us to try and sign Bastoni, waiting until the summer isn’t the worst option. However, it wouldn’t hurt for us to sign a world-class centre-back in the winter and try to finish the season with silverware which seems so important for so many reasons right now.
