Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij

According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato (h/t Football. London), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij for a January transfer.

The Dutch international sees his current contract expire next summer, although his agent plans to hold talks with the Nerazzurri about a new deal. Should that fail, Spurs could look to pounce on the 30-year-old.

Vrij was part of Antonio Conte’s Inter squad that won the Scudetto in the 2020/21 season. It now looks like the Italian wants to reunite with a defender that he has previously worked with to great effect.

The 30-year-old joined Inter from Serie A rivals, Lazio, in 2018 for a free transfer. Since then, the centre-back has been a regular for the club and has featured 16 times in all competitions so far this season.

Conte is not short of options at the back. The likes of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet have been good for the Italian coach at the back. But goals have been leaking this season.

Spurs have conceded 21 goals this season in the Premier League, the most among the top eight teams. Also recent injuries to Romero and Dier highlighted that the depth at the back is not good enough and needs reinforcements.

Adding an experienced defender like Vrij at the back could help Spurs stop the leak. There is also a possibility that the player could be available for a cut-fee price in January, should he not sign a new contract.

Vrij will likely feature for his country in the World Cup in Qatar next week. Decent performances there could be the cherry on the top for the north London club to pursue a deal for him.
