Son Heung-min answers when he will return to action for Tottenham Hotspur after South Korea’s World Cup exit
Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min exited the 2022 FIFA World Cup when South Korea were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by Brazil in the last 16.
Son picked up a facial injury when Spurs played Olympique de Marseille on matchday 6 of the UEFA Champions League. He was withdrawn in the first half after a horrid challenge from Chancel Mbemba.
Spurs needed a point to progress but they ended up winning the game 2-1 to progress to the last 16. But Son’s fracture in his left eye socket filled all Spurs and South Korean fans with anxiety.
Nevertheless, he took to the field in the opening group-stage game against Uruguay that ended 0-0, sporting a black mask to protect his face from further injury. He continued to be available to play for them until the last 16 clash.
In fact, it was Son’s assist that helped South Korea beat Portugal 2-1 in stoppage time and qualify for the knockout rounds. Now, speaking about when he can return to action for Spurs, he told South Korean newspaper JoongAng Daily (h/t the Express):
“The Premier League is on a break, so I think I should return as soon as possible and will need to play with my mask on. I was born to play football and I am a professional footballer so it’s only right to continue to play even with my mask on.”
“Although I wish I could recover quickly and play without the mask. I will have to discuss those matters with my doctor.”
Spurs resume playing club football on 26 December against Brentford in the Premier League. It’s safe to say Son should be available for the game barring any lat slip-ups.

It would have been an odd sight seeing him play extensively for his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and then take a break from club football. But we know Son. He’d want to be on the pitch in Tottenham white the moment the season resumes.
