Seven first-team players miss friendly win over Motherwell due to injury
Tottenham Hotspur saw seven first-team players miss the friendly against Motherwell on Friday (9 December) at the Hotspur Way. Spurs won the game 4-0.
Defender Ben Davies and midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur were both out with injuries that they picked up in Qatar during the World Cup. Ryan Sessegnon, Lucas Moura, Emerson Royal, Clement Lenglet and Fraser Forster also missed the game.
The biggest concerns here would be Davies, Bentancur, and Emerson. They are, at least for now, the first-choice options for manager Antonio Conte in their respective positions this season.
According to Football. London, Sessegnon is back in training but this match came a little early for him to be fully fit. The 22-year-old picked up his injury during our 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup last month.
The other players meanwhile are believed to have suffered various minor knocks in training in recent days. Their absence was merely a precaution that Conte decided to take.
Right-back Matt Doherty scored a brace with Dejan Kulusevski and Bryan Gil also getting on the scoresheet. While the Swedish international has returned from injury, it was good to see Gil get some action and also get his name on the scoresheet.
A lot of youngsters were given the chance to impress as Charlie Sayers started in defence with Japhet Tanganga, while midfielders like Harvey White and Alfie Devine also managed to get some minutes under their pocket.
Spurs will now host League 1 side OGC Nice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 21 as their final friendly before the Premier League restarts. The north London side returns to action as they travel to face local rivals Brentford on December 26.
A fit and healthy squad will be important for a strong finish to the season. Bentancur picked up an injury already while on duty with Uruguay but at least Richarlison will be back prematurely after Brazil’s loss against Croatia.
