Noel Whelan has insisted that Denzel Dumfries ‘ticks every single box’ for Tottenham boss Antonio Conte
Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has insisted that Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries ‘ticks every single box’ for Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte.
Spurs along with rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in The Netherlands international. It is believed that the Nerazzuri want at least €50 million for their star defender, who has shown his ability at both ends of the pitch during his time in Italy.
Conte currently has three options to deploy on the right-hand side. But none of Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty or Djed Spence have managed to live up to the expectations this season.
Emerson has been the go-to choice this season for the north London club. However, the former Barcelona man has lacked the end product in the final third, while he also has committed some silly mistakes at the back.
Doherty did step up for a few games in this season but has lacked the consistency to be a regular. Spence, meanwhile, is not a preferred option by Conte and has struggled for game time this season.
Now, former Leeds striker Whelan, while speaking exclusively to Football. Insider, has said that the Inter right-back ticks all the boxes that Conte needs at Spurs.
“It’s no secret that Conte’s not happy with the options he has, in Doherty, Spence, and Emerson Royal. This makes perfect sense after seeing him play on the biggest stage with the Netherlands. He ticks every single box as a wing-back, and that is one area that Tottenham are desperate to get right.”
“It’s a crucial position for the way Conte plays. Dumfries could be their man if they go all out to beat Chelsea and Man United. He’s guaranteed to play week-in, week-out at Spurs – so I think joining them would make a lot more sense.”
Dumfries has been excellent for his country in the World Cup this year. The 26-year-old has played in all the games for his side and was crucial in their success to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
For Inter too, the defender has been the first-choice this campaign. He has played in 20 games in all competitions and should he sign for us he would no doubt be an immediate upgrade to the options that we have.

The Dutchman sees his current contract expire in 2025 (transfermarkt). The 26-year-old has shown that he can perform on the biggest of the stages and it will be wise for Spurs to make a move for him next month.
The battle from Manchester United could be a potential hurdle, since a move to Chelsea, on paper, may not make complete sense for the right-back. While the Red Devils could use an upgrade on Diogo Dalot, Reece James is the undisputed right-back under manager Graham Potter.
