Paul Robinson urges Tottenham Hotspur to wait until the summer to sign Sofyan Amrabat

Former Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper Paul Robinson has urged the club to wait until the summer of 2023 to sign Morocco and Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat.

The North London side are interested in the 26-year-old’s signature. He has been impressive in Qatar with the Atlas Lions. Walid Regragui’s team beat Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson, who spent four years at Spurs, feels the Lilywhotes should not sign Amrabat in January. Instead, he wants the club to wait and see how the Moroccan performs for the rest of the season.

“I’ve been impressed with Amrabat. He has been brilliant throughout the World Cup. There is always a few players who surprise and shine at major tournaments. It is difficult to sign a player off the back of a few performances in the World Cup though. It would be a risk if Spurs signed him.

“If Amrabat can continue this form when he returns to Italy then maybe it would be worthwhile trying to sign him next summer. I’m not sure you can make a signing off the back of three or four games.”

The 26-year-old started his professional career in the Netherlands with Utrecht and Feyenoord before moving to Club Brugge. After the midfielder’s stint in Belgium, he joined Hellas Verona and made his way to Fiorentina after a season in Italy.

Amrabat has been impressive with the Viola since his arrival in the summer of 2020. In the current campaign, the Moroccan has been a regular first-team member, making 20 appearances for the Serie A outfit in all competitions.

Morocco have been the surprise package at this year’s World Cup. They managed to finish top of their group, pipping Croatia and Belgium. Then, in the round of 16, the Atlas Lions beat Spain on penalties. Subsequently, the African side cut short Cristiano Ronaldo’s campaign in Qatar.

In the recent transfer window, Tottenham signed Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion to reinforce the middle of the park. However, the Mali international has had a mixed start to life in North London.

Antonio Conte also has Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp as defensive midfielder options in his side. However, in recent fixtures, we have looked shaky defensively. Thus, we need to be more robust in the middle of the park.

Amrabat has been consistently performing for Fiorentina for some time now. However, he has only caught a lot of people’s eyes due to his displays at the World Cup. But will Spurs be able to sign the Moroccan? Only time will tell.
