Romano tells Tottenham Hotspur Inter Milan’s hardened stance on Denzel Dumfries

Tottenham Hotspur have been told to pay ‘big money’ or forget about signing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan in the January transfer window.

The Netherlands international was in fine form at the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he helped them reach the quarter-finals of the competition. His best performance came in a 3-1 last 16 win against the USA.

He assisted two goals and scored another as Holland cruised past manager Gregg Berhalter’s side via a 3-1 scoreline. A penalty he conceded against Argentina in the quarter-final loss may have grounded Dumfries a bit.

But that doesn’t change what fans would have seen from him in recent month. Dumfries is a regular under manager Simone Inzaghi at Inter, where he has scored once and assisted three times in 15 Serie A games this campaign.

He was signed by Inter from PSV Eindhoven just last year. It won’t make sense for I Nerazzuri to sell a player at the peak of his powers after just over a year and a half unless it is for an audacious sum.

That’s what transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has written in his CaughtOffside column ‘(h/t Football.London):

“Big money or nothing, this is their stance – and the absolute priority is to keep Dumfries at least until the end of the season.”

It’s not very often that we see teams break the bank for a full-back but the 26-year-old may well be worth the money. It would be a long-term investment in a position where we have struggled with Emerson Royal as our first-choice pick.

Moreover, this is a player that manager Antonio Conte may like given his ability to attack and defend with due diligence. His engine and decision-making in the final third would make him a very potent addition down that wing.

But it’s hard to imagine a situation where we have four right-backs. Hence, selling off one of Emerson, Matt Doherty, or Djed Spence will be a wise call.

That will also raise funds, albeit a small portion, to potentially put towards signing Dumfries.
