Tottenham Hotspur offered fresh transfer hope by Stefan de Vrij’s agent amid Inter Milan contract standoff

Tottenahm Hotspur have been linked with moves for Inter Milan centre-backs Alessandro Bastoni and Stefan de Vrij in recent months.

While the Italy international seems like a tough transfer to get over the line, a move for De Vrij could still be a possible scenario. He is, after all, not getting any younger and could hold ambitions of playing outside Italy.

If comments from his agent Federico Pastorello are anything to go by, then the former Feyenoord defender could leave his club in the near future. As per Italian outlet  TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t Football.London), Inter have offered him a new deal.

But he remains ‘lukewarm’ about their new offer. With a baby on the way, De Vrij’s aims and objectives about his career could change, and Pastorello believes there will be no shortage of suitors if he is put on the transfer market. He told TWM (h/t Football.London):

“No problems. Then February-March will be a good time to make certain choices. There will be no shortage of offers, but at his age and for a very thoughtful boy like him, who has basically played for two-three clubs in his career, all aspects will be important.

“He will soon be a dad too and this will be another aspect he will take into consideration. The liking and the possibility to stay is absolute. At the end of the year there will be many top clubs looking for a centre-back…”

These could be the comments of an agent looking to get his client a nice little payday with I Nerazzurri. But he isn’t wrong that there would be clubs that need top quality centre-backs and that De Vrij will have no shortage of suitors.

That is especially the case if the 30-year-old leaves as a free agent in the summer. Moreover, Spurs have the added advantage of being a foreign club that can discuss a Bosman transfer with the player in January.

He is 30 but he isn’t old. Centre-backs can have a longer shelf life if they look after themselves well. And for a potential free transfer, De Vrij would be a world-class addition in any defensive line.

It just remains to be seen what will happen between him and Inter when it comes to a new contract. A new deal could, of course, make things hugely difficult and comparatively more expensive for his suitors.
