Transfer News: Chelsea plan to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Milan Skriniar on a free transfer in 2023

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Football. London), rivals Chelsea plan to sign Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar on a free transfer in 2023 amid Tottenham Hotspur interest.

Skriniar sees his current contract expire at the end of the season and is yet to sign any deal with the Italian side. As such, the 27-year-old will be free to discuss and agree to personal terms with foreign clubs from next month.

The Blues spent heavily to reinforce their backline in the summer and still plan to continue doing so. It is believed that they are ready to ‘step in’ and reach an agreement with the Slovakian international for a free transfer to west London next summer.

Antonio Conte has been meaning to add to his backline too. Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have proven to be reliable so far, however, there is still a lack of depth in the defensive department.

Clement Lenglet joined on a season-long loan and has had his moments. Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga have failed to impress Conte so far this season and it won’t be surprising to see either of them leave next month.

Skriniar has already worked under the Italian during his time as Inter’s boss. The 27-year-old played a vital role for the coach as he guided the Nerazzurri to a Scudetto, before parting ways with them.

The centre-back will also know that now is the best time for him to secure a move to the Premier League. He has been in Italy since 2016 but could play out his prime years in north London if everything goes according to plan.

An experienced and commanding centre-back, he would make a fine addition to the squad. However, the lily whites will have to fight off competition from Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.

With the transfer window fast approaching, Inter could let their star defender leave for a cut-fee price than lose him for free next summer. Spurs will be wise to pounce on such a deal, as it could prove to be a bargain in the long run.
