Tottenham Hotspur told reason why Antonio Conte contract talks have stalled
Former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie has said that manager Antonio Conte would have a ‘rotten taste in his mouth’ due to Tottenham Hotspur’s broken promises in the transfer window.
In Conte’s first transfer window at the club, back in January, we brought in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski. The signings came on deadline day, which would have led some to think that the Juve duo weren’t our first-choice players in that position.
It has, however, proven to be a masterstroke. Both of them are now an indispensable part of our first-team set-up.
Spurs signed several players this summer, with Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Destiny Udogie, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Clement Lenglet (loan), and Djed Spence all putting pen to paper on a deal at N17.
McAvennie, however, believes that Spurs had promised more to Conte when he signed as the club’s manager. As per the Daily Mail, Tottenham’s attempts to tie down the former Inter Milan manager to a new deal are likely to fail despite a pay rise.
McAvennie claims it could be because of a lack of backing in the transfer windows. He exclusively told Football Insider:
“Did Conte get the players that he was wanting? I do not think so. I do not think he has been given what he was promised. He has been given more than what most managers but I do not think he has been given what he was promised.”
He then warned Tottenham to make the most of the upcoming transfer windows if they want to retain him. Conte’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023 and it would raise a great deal of anxiety if he doesn’t renew it in the coming weeks.
“Managers like that do not hang about. He is going to have a rotten taste in his mouth. “He is not going to be short of a job but I do not know how many people Tottenham can go through to find that winning formula.”
What has happened, has happened. It’s about the present and the future and Daniel Levy and co. have the chance to show they back Conte by putting their money towards signing world-class talent.

And that doesn’t mean space fillers to occupy the bench such as some of the names we signed this summer – but genuine world class players that would make the starting XI at teams like Manchester City or Liverpool. Centre-back would be a good position to start and a quality right-wing back won’t hurt as well.
