Antonio Conte confirms Tottenham Hotspur’s January transfer stance
Manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur should be looking to replicate that success they found with deals for Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski with Juventus in the last January transfer window.
The Sweden international arrived on a loan deal that cost £8.3million in fees, with a conditional obligation to buy for £29.2million. Bentancur joined us for a fee in the region of £21.5million with add-ons on a four-and-a-half year deal.
These deals came so late in the winter window that some fans wouldn’t have been able to help but think that the duo weren’t our first choice targets in this position. Nevertheless, they have proven to be a resounding success.
Deki is one of the most important players in the final third for us, as evidenced by his impact in our latest games against Brentford and Liverpool (before the World Cup break). Bentancur, meanwhile, is an irreplaceable part of Conte’s midfield.
It is what it is
If Conte is to be believed, then the two have modest salaries that the Lilywhites are able to happily afford. In a few days’ time, the transfer drama will kickstart again.
There are several positions that Spurs can strengthen – defence being a big one – and the former Inter Milan manager has more or less confirmed the kind of signings the club would be looking to make. He told Sky Sports (h/t Evening Standard):
“Tottenham want to invest on young players, as we did with Kulusevski and Bentancur. Talents but with accessible salaries. This is what we’ll try to do.”
It is what it is. Spurs may not be able to compete for the biggest deals in the transfer market that fans of, say, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) or Manchester City would expect their teams to be involved in.

There are a lot of gems to be found in the transfer market that align with the club’s financial pay structure. It has been said that Conte could base his decision to renew his contract at Spurs if he is backed well in January, so it is a doubly important for our board.
