Tottenham Hotspur told to send ‘right message’ by signing Achraf Hakimi and Josko Gvardiol

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has asked Spurs to ‘send the right message’ by signing Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Achraf Hakimi and RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Jack Pitt-Brooke of the Athletic (Subscription Required) suggested earlier this month that while manager Antonio Conte is a fan of the Morocco international, a move for Hakimi seems unlikely. And that makes sense.

PSG don’t have a need to sell the 24-year-old that is slowly approaching the prime years of his career. As for Gvardiol, the Express have cited Tottenham’s interest in the 20-year-old centre-back from Croatia.

Now, Robinson has asked Spurs to replicate the hype they created after signing a proven world-class player in Richarlison by signing Hakimi and Gvardiol. He told Football Insider (h/t Express):

“Gvardiol and Hakimi would be statement signings. That would show a level of intent a bit like when they signed Richarlison. Spurs did not fish around for a bargain, they went out and signed a tried and tested star. Everyone stood up and took notice.”

“That would be the case if Spurs signed Gvardiol or Hakimi. It would send out the right message. I would love to see them both at Tottenham, Hakimi especially.”

“He would bring so much to the team in the system Conte plays. It is well known that they need a better right wing-back and there are not many better out there than Hakimi.”

All good points. But it would be a mammoth task trying to sign even one of these two players, let alone both.

Not only are superclubs such as Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Chelsea in the hunt for Gvardiol alongside Spurs, but he could have a price tag of above 100million Pounds. That would surely be unfathomable for a defender from our point of view.

Hopefully, Spurs can get a deal over the line for the Croatian star who starred for his team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they finished third. If the financial hurdles are cleared, there would hardly be a better signing for our backline than Gvardiol.

As for Hakimi, it would be nothing less of a shock if Les Bleus sell the former Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund star in the near future, especially for an affordable amount. Pedro Porro is a more sensible option, at least on paper.
