Spurs Transfer News: Lyon defender Mal Gusto on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar
Lyon right-back Malo Gusto is one of several right-backs on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar ahead of the winter transfer window, as per Football.London.
The 19-year-old has made himself into one of Ligue 1’s best defenders. He has one assist in 14 games this season for the French outfit and will only get better with time.
A summary by WhoScored on Gusto’s strengths and weaknesses give a better picture on what to expect. They praise his passing, crossing, and defending skills while mentioning concentration and aerial duels as a point of weakness.
As long as Guston can attack well, that shouldn’t be a problem. Are full-backs are famous for being ultra attacking and play akin to wingers at times when we are on the attack.
One of three options
Moreover, the teenager is very young and under a top defensive coach like Antonio Conte, can hone his skills to become world class very soon. It remains to be seen if Olympique Lyonnais will be open to a mid-season deal for their star right-back.
He has only 18 months left on his contract at the Groupama Stadium and if he doesn’t renew his contract, then Les Gones will know that the next three transfer windows will be their only chance of cashing in on a highly-rated youngster.
Pedro Porro of Sporting CP and Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan are two more options in this position. The two are more experienced than Gusto and are balanced full-backs with regards to their attacking and defensive abilities.
In all honesty, any one of these three would do just fine for us. We need to upgrade or even let go of Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty, followed by adding a new world-class player in that position.

Djed Spence is having absolutely no luck under Conte and has made just three last-minute appearances as a substitute in the Premier League. If the Italian doesn’t trust the Englishman just yet, we cannot wait around too long before making a top quality signing in this position.
