Graeme Souness believes Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris is past his prime
Former Liverpool manager Graham Souness, while speaking to SkySports via Twitter, has not held back on his verdict of Tottenham Hotspur captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Lloris was on the receiving end of a calamitous error which led to Aston Villa’s first goal wherein he spilt a long shot aimed directly at him and allowed Ollie Watkins to steal the ball from him and set it up for Emiliano Buendia.
The error was not worthy of the standards required to play in the Premier League and Souness believes the keeper is past his prime.
“I am not a big fan of Lloris. I have said it for a long time. Since the start of last season, he has made four errors leading to goal.”
“That is the worst in the Premier League for goalkeepers. For me, he is past his sell-by date.”
Lloris has been a long-time servant of the club and has done very well in between the sticks and also in leading the club.
However, as many supporters believe, over the past few years, he has been prone to making errors which have turned costly for the team.
Lloris will be 37 by the time his contract expires in June 2024 (Transfermarkt) and the club need to look at a long-term replacement for the French national team captain.
It could be argued that the keeper’s best days are behind him and Antonio Conte must be looking at other targets to solve the issue. Summer signing Fraser Forster is a good backup but never on the level to take the no.1 spot in the starting eleven.

Hence, it would be better if a replacement could be found by the summer transfer window which would allow the new signing to blend in with Lloris still at the realm and at the same time, take some much-needed time off Lloris who is entering the final stages of his career.
