Danny Murphy believes Tottenham Hotspur should bring back Mauricio Pochettino if Antonio Conte leaves

Former Fulham and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Tottenham Hotspur should bring back former coach Mauricio Pochettino if current boss Antonio Conte leaves at the end of this season.

Conte took charge of the north London side midway last season from Nuno Espirito Santo and managed to steer the ship in the right direction, helping us secure Champions League football on a dramatic last day of the season.

However, this season the side has displayed very inconsistent performance and have suffered embarrassing defeats at the hands of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

While the boss has been unclear about his future at the club, former midfielder Murphy while speaking to talkSPORT believes that the north London side should bring back Pochettino if the Italian leaves in May. The Argentine manager initially joined Spurs from Southampton in May 2014 after doing a brilliant job with the Saints.

“I love Poch. It wouldn’t be a bad option, would it? He’s been away, he’s learnt a bit more, worked at a different club, different players.”

Pochettino enjoyed quite a good time with the Lilywhites, with the Argentine being in-charge of the club for more than five years from 2014 till his abrupt and surprising sacking in 2019. The coach managed 293 games in all competitions and worked with some great talents throughout his time here.

However, he failed to win a trophy with us, something that our rival fans still tease us about. Conte is a known serial winner having shown his expertise with the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and even local rivals Chelsea.

Things have not gone according to plan, but there is still time for the manager to control his ship from sinking. He has been backed in the market as proven in the summer and it will be wise to back him again this month.

But if Conte cannot see his same level of dedication from the club, he might walk away. It remains to be seen if the north London side can keep hold of such a top manager at the end of the season.

Pochettino knows the club but his winning mentality and pedigree was questioned here and at PSG. We were always ‘nearly there’ with him in charge… but maybe that wasn’t a bad thing. Maybe all we needed was more patience.
