Tottenham Hotspur send message after Gareth Bale announces retirement
Tottenham Hotspur and Wales legend Gareth Bale has announced his immediate retirement from club and international football, as per BBC.
The 33-year-old last played for Los Angeles FC after moving to the MLS club this summer once his contract at Real Madrid expired. He also captained Wales at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
More importantly from our perspective, he emerged as one of our most talented, successful, and famous players in recent decades. He started off as a left-back for us before moving further up the pitch each passing season.
He emerged onto the scene in the 2007-08 campaign, where we won the League Cup – our last piece of silverware. Bale was signed from Southampton as a teenager at the start of the season.
Who would have imagined he would go on to score 72 goals and provide 58 assists in 237 games across competitions for us? He left for Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
It was a transfer that was perhaps understandable during that time given Spurs were unable to compete with Madrid on the European footballing landscape. He went on to win five UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies with them.
Now, he has announced the end of his glittering playing career in a social media post, which read:
“After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football. I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love.”
Spurs were quick to send their message across to one of their most iconic footballers ever. The official club account tweeted:
“Thank you for everything, @GarethBale11 💙 Congratulations on an incredible career.”
We wish Bale the best in his future endeavours. Hopefully, he can join Spurs in some sort of a coaching capacity because he would have a thing or two he can teach our youngsters. In his day, there was hardly anyone better at playing football.
