Chelsea table bid for Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Denzel Dumfries

Chelsea have tabled a bid of 35million Euros for Inter Milan right-back and Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Denzel Dumfries, as per Italian publication La Repubblica (h/t Football.London).

The 26-year-old has become a man in-demand due to his skillset, age profile, and displays in recent months with I Nerazzurri. He is a player that both Spurs and Chelsea can use right now.

The Blues have no one to compete with Reece James. Cesar Azpilicueta is more of a defensive right-back who dabbles between centre-back and right-wing-back if and when needed.

But this is where Spurs can hope to trump the Blues. Where do James and Dumfries start together if the latter does arrive at SW6? It just won’t make sense.

It is hard to imagine an England or a Netherlands international being benched. They can have a situation where they both compete for minutes together, like Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy, or Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell.

But it remains to be seen if either of the two players will be open to such a proposition. If the former PSV Eindhoven right-back comes to N17, he is a starting right-back – no questions asked.

Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have just not been at a world-class level and right-wing-back is one of the positions we must upgrade. Djed Spence arrived last summer but isn’t trusted by manager Antonio Conte quite clearly given his lack of minutes at the club.

Hence, Dumfries shouldn’t really expect any serious competition if he does come to Tottenham. Hence, hopefully, Chelsea stumble with either their bid or when it comes to entering personal negotiations with the player.

But it wouldn’t matter for much if Spurs are lousy in the meantime. We must be active and ready to pursue this deal alongside Pedro Porro of Sporting CP, who we are keen to sign as well. Either of them will work wonders for Spurs fans right now.
