Report: Former Tottenham player aided signing Pedro Porro signing

Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur will have to splash out around £26 million to land Pedro Porro.

Marcus Edwards helped Tottenham Hotspur in signing Pedro Porro

Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards spent a fair few years at Tottenham Hotspur before making the move to Vitoria Guimaraes in the summer of 2021.

The 24-year-old has become a huge part of manager Ruben Amorim’s Sporting side and is one of their very best players since joining them last January. His contract also contained a 50% sell-on clause for Spurs.

This means they would have gotten half of any fee Sporting agreed with a club for selling Edwards in the future. Now, Portuguese outlet Record, Spurs conceded 15% of those sell-on rights to sign the Spanish right-back.

They will also pay a fee of 47.5million Euros to the Lions in transfer fee, which is their club’s record sale after Bruno Fernandes’ transfer to Manchester United. Porro is also seemingly happy to seal a move to N17.

Great move all around

Interviewed at the airport before flying out to London for his medical, the former Manchester City right-back said:

“I said that my head was not well, but Sporting understood and I am very grateful. What delayed the negotiations? I don’t know.”

It seems that all parties have been pleased with this particular deal. We get to sign Porro, who will be an immediate upgrade on Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty, and Djed Spence.

Sporting get a huge fee and more income if and when they sell Edwards. The player also gets a chance to return to England and show the Cityzens they made a mistake in letting him leave.

Spurs were very smart to put a sell-on clause when Edwards left the club back in 2019. Three-and-a-half years later, it has come back to help us in signing Porro.

Moreover, we can still rake in 35% of the fee Sporting agree on with another club if they plan to sell the English winger.
