Bournemouth sign Ilya Zabarnyi, who Tottenham Hotspur ‘extensively scouted’
Bournemouth have signed Ukrainian centre-back Ilya Zabarnyi for £20million, after Tottenham Hotspur extensively scouted the defender.
This is according to Football.London, who confirm that Spurs have lost in the race to sign the 20-year-old. This is a shame to hear as a Spurs fan, but there could be logic behind this.
Perhaps the player was promised more playing time at the DW Stadium outfit and this could be starting step for him before he tries to test his skills at a ‘bigger’ club. Make no mistake, we need a centre-back.
But the Ukraine international is young and has no experience playing in the top-five leagues. He has 24 senior caps with the Eastern European nation and played in 25 games across competitions for Dynamo Kyiv this season.
No bother
So, he does have what it takes to play in the first team. But it is hard to imagine that he would have played here ahead of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, and Ben Davies.
Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez aren’t world-class yet but they certainly have more experience playing in England and under manager Antonio Conte. Moreover, the fee the Cherries have paid for him is a lot.
It is certainly an amount you’d pay for someone who is more experienced and has played at the very top level. Hence, it’s better that we save the money and sign a proper world-class centre-back rather than look for stop-gap signings.

Investing in the youth and the future is fine, but not at the cost of signing players who can do the job right here and right now. Let’s hope there is an elite centre-back that would be joining us at the season’s end.
