Rennes chief reveals why Djed Spence was signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur
Rennes Executive Chairman Olivier Cloarec has revealed why his team opted to sign Djed Spence on loan from Tottenham Hotspur this month.
The 22-year-old English right-back will be on loan at Stade Rennais until the end of the season. The move has come after Spurs agreed on a deal to sign Pedro Porro on a permanent transfer from Sporting CP.
Speaking about Spence’s arrival, Cloarec told Rennes’ official French website:
“After the injury of Lorenz Assignon and that of Hamari Traoré at the start of the week, additional bad news, we had a need for this position. We had very good feedback and we are very happy that he chose Stade Rennais FC because he had possibilities in other European clubs.”
“We were able to pull out of the game and we had to be very reactive. The recruitment cell works all year round and this is not a last minute discovery. He is a player that we have been following for a while.”
Spence enjoyed just four substitute appearances in the Premier League under manager Antonio Conte. With the club having signed Porro from Sporting CP, there was no chance Spence was seeing more playing time here.
It’s best for him to play at Rennes, where they seem to have a real need for a right-back. With Lorenz Assignon and Hamari Traore out injured, Spence has a chance to start straightaway and even hold that spot even when the Rennes duo are back from injury.
Hopefully, it’s enough to convince Conte that he has what it takes to succeed here. Ideally, Spurs should offload at least one of Doherty, Spence, or Emerson in the summer on a permanent basis.
