Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier sends message to Matt Doherty after shock contract termination
Tottenham Hotspur mutually agreed to terminate Matt Doherty’s contract in order to facilitate his transfer to Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day.
The official Twitter account of the Lilywhites confirmed this news as they announced the 31-year-old’s departure to the Wanda Metropolitano. This has left some Tottenham Hotspur players ‘shocked’.
This is according to Football.London, who cite FIFA regulations that states:
“From 1 July 2022 until 30 June 2023 A maximum of 8 players loaned out A maximum of 8 players loaned in between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023, a club can loan OUT eight players during a registration period and then loan OUT another (different) set of eight players in the second registration period of the same season, provided there are never more than eight loans OUT at any time during the relevant season.”
In simple terms, Tottenham weren’t allowed to loan out Doherty as it would have exceded the eight-player limit that FIFA regulations have enforced to stop clubs from stockpiling young players.
This certainly hampered a big chance for us to sell Matt Doherty and rake in a few million if we were to sell him in the summer. But it seems that the regulation either caught us off guard or we were forced into taking this step.
Djed Spence’s loan move to Stade Rennais, after all, was also in the works on deadline day. Nevertheless, this could be a fresh start for the Republic of Ireland international in Spain.
Dier went on to post an Instagram story where he shared a photo of Doherty’s announcement at Atletico Madrid and captioned it ‘Vamos Dohertinho’, which translates to “Let’s go, Dohertinho” with Dohertinho being his nickname.
It would be a strange sight seeing our Doherty sporting the Red and White of Los Colchoneros but maybe it was time to sever ties. Pedro Porro’s signing from Sporting CP would have entirely changed the pecking order.

The former Manchester City right-back should be the starting right-back for us. All in all, it’s good that we solved the right-back dilemma once and for all under manager Antonio Conte, but seeing Doherty leave for nothing is a financial blow, albeit a potentially minor one, even if it means his wages are off our books.
